CIS recruiting has and will continue to be hot and heavy topic over the coming months. The intense recruitment of players from across Canada the past several years has continually raised the level of university football in this country.
Twenty five years ago many programs including McGill, Manitoba and McMaster did not even have full time head coaches.
Many programs like Western Ontario, Toronto and Alberta maintained faculty teaching responsibilities for their full time head coaches.
Programs such as U of Regina, Laval and Montreal did not even exist. Outside of a few like Tom Arnett at WLU and Casey Smith as UBC , a full time assistant was almost unheard of.
University coaches in Canada move on the the CFL level now much more seamlessly than ever before. Today every program across the country has a full time head coach football coach only. Every program has at least one full time assistant. Many have as many as four full time assistants. The opportunity for young coaches wishing to one day be a full time university coach has quadrupled in this country. That alone is a major factor in the evolution of the product on the field in the 20 10’s. Universities are better able to now identify players best suited for their programs, spend the time recruiting those identified players and in the end teaching, working and developing those players. Fans of football across this country can and will continue to enjoy the evolution of the product on the field. Fans of football recruiting will continue to grow as the off season recruitment of top prospects becomes more visible, intense and higher profile with each and every new addition. Over the past two months a number of top highschool prospects from across Canada have made verbal or signed LOI with a number of universities across Canada. Please note that CIS verbal commits and signees are not legally bound to their chosen team and could change their current decision.
